Fun Photo Friday 1/29

Introducing... Fun Photo Friday! Add TGIFPF to your vocabulary and look forward to weekly updates on Hazelcat! And maybe some guest appearances from some friends like Gracie and Barrett! Also, I do take pictures of things besides cats... sometimes.

I am really looking forward to continuing to share Hazel's adorableness with the world, and making it a once a week post instead of a daily one will help me feel less like I need to take some trash photo of Hazel in a dark room just to have something to post for her adoring fans.

What has Hazel been up to?

I disturbed Hazel's slumber when I woke up and found her next to me like this:

But she wasn't disturbed for long...

Hazel was in my lap, but I got up to go to the bathroom, and when I came back, she had stolen my blanket in revenge:

The sounds of William Basinki lured Hazel to my desk. What a cultured kitty.

Hazel demands pets when I get home from work:

Dat leg

In other news...

Mittens Bernie has found himself in Center City

I have discovered an incredible bakery in Old City:

I make a mean chili when I follow someone else's recipe:

Thank you so much for checking out my Fun Photo Friday! It means a lot to me. I would love to hear from you in the comments (yes, I decided to enable those), or by text, email, or Discord!

2024: Year in Review

Foreword I’m wrestling with traditions. Rituals. Marking the time as it goes by with more than the weekday-weekend split, more than simply naming the days by their slot in the seven-day cycle and their appointed month and number. For years, I had church and family traditions to give shape and meaning to the seasons. Candlelight services on Christmas Eve, family lunches at my mother’s family’s houses on Thanksgiving and Christmas, Lenten sacrifices, Easter sunrise services. Those have all fallen away with time and geographic distance. Alex’s and my family have scattered across the country from Alaskan islands to South Carolina pinelands, from hip college towns in California to forested suburbs in Missouri, and even the 100 miles between Philadelphia and Baltimore is increasingly a distance I am reluctant to cross. How to commit any given holiday to one part of the clan or the other? Each holiday we spend with my father is a time zone away from a holiday we could spend with Alex’s fa...

Why Do We Like to Make Characters Suffer?

There's a question that I've been pondering lately: Why do people like seeing their favorite characters suffer? As many of you know, I love Final Fantasy VII. In particular, I love Cloud Strife, the moody sad boy protagonist of the game. Because of my great affection for this fictional man, I seek out (and write) fanfiction where Cloud faces a variety of hardships from childhood trauma to harrowing battle injuries to horrific laboratory experimentation to plain just being lonely. But why? Why do I like reading about a character that means a lot to me, who reminds me a lot of myself in some ways and has helped me understand myself better, suffering? Why do I seek out stories where he is in pain? And why am I not alone? There is an entire genre of fanfiction called “whump” where the writer’s favorite character is subjected to whatever sadistic imaginings the author can dream up. And people can dream up a lot of pain for Cloud Strife, largely because that’s sort of his deal in th...

Fun Photo Friday 2/19

Hello friends! I've got a good one for you today. What has Hazel been up to? Hazel provided a lot of moral support during my studies this week. She also did a bit of studying on her own. Gotta take a closer look at that info box That feeling when you scream into the void while yawning. A series of cozy Hazels This may just look like Hazel in my lap, but it's also me putting off lunch for a good 20 minutes because Hazel was so comfy. Accidental flash is dramatic. Hazel is pretending to be a moustache. This is also how an alarming number of customers think a mask should be worn. In other news... My Starbucks hat has started shaping my hair into some sort of crest. Also more Hazel. My phone says that Paul sent me a picture of Boycat in the year 53,069. Thanks for keeping up with the weekly updates! What Hazel picture are you most feeling today? I think the screaming into the void will speak to a lot of people.
